essential dave lordan

Dave is so prolific and his output so diverse that it can be hard to keep up. Essential works of Dave Lordan are an ideal introduction to the work of this multi-genre writer, performer, editor and educator.

From first read of Dave Lordan’s work I was convinced of his genius. I’ve since seen him perform his writing in Dublin, Galway and London. Each time, as writer and performer, he created that electricity that lets you know you’re witnessing a unique talent and you leave knowing you were lucky to have been in the room that night.

education

Long recognised as one of Ireland’s most inspiring creativity teachers, Dave teaches creative writing at primary, secondary, adulted, and university levels. He is currently a member of staff at the Centre for Poetry Studies in DCU, at the Big Smoke Writing Factory where he co-directs Dublin Young Authors, and at Bray Institute of Further Education. Dave works with the overseas programmes of a number of American Universities to provide visiting students with high quality educational experiences while in Ireland.

Lordan is a man on a mission. He is determined to professionalise the practice of teaching creative writing....I attended Lordan’s one-day “crash course” on the subject back in March and it’s inspired me to change my approach, particularly when it comes to doing creative writing workshops with children.

The title of this new anthology – which echoes “Young Ireland”, the name given to a movement of the 1840s – seems to suggest that, in Ireland at least, history still has fiction by the throat. Yet the tales that Dave Lordan has collected here are more interested in looking forward than back, offering wry and occasionally compelling insight into the mercurial fortunes of a contemporary and cosmopolitan Ireland.

 Times Literary Supplement

Young Irelanders is an exciting anthology of short stories that will open your eyes and soul to a new and continually evolving Irish literary scene, featuring a selection of Ireland’s most gifted and daring contemporary short-fiction writers:  Sheila Armstrong, Claire-Louise Bennett, Colin Barrett, Kevin Curran, Rob Doyle, Oisín Fagan, Mia Gallagher, Alan McMonagle, Roisín O’Donnell, Cathy Sweeney, Eimear Ryan, Sydney Weinberg.

Young Irelanders reinvigorates the traditional Irish short story with a palpable sense of adventure. From Kevin Curran’s heart-wrenching portrayal of bullying and suicide, to Roisin O’Donnell’s beautifully poignant narrative of a Brazilian girl’s journey to Ireland for love, to Rob Doyle’s searing tale of infidelity, the characters in these tales are searching for love, for courage, for release, and for glory.

Surging with an energy and vigour synonymous with this new generation of Irish writers, the stories are in turn profound, shocking, lyrical and dark, while remaining endlessly and exuberantly inventive.

Dave shines a light into the darkest corners…around the cities,  through the towns, up the mountains and on down the rivers, and always that bit of hope we surely crave. There are some of his poems that I would love to sing.

Lordan moves Irish poetry forward, looking at modern realities rather than the Platonic ideals many poets are still relying on. His poems are built using startling images, expert restraint and energetic lines. They wake you up, shake you, insist you pay attention.
